Step back in time

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the Mayor of the City of Sulphur. I am committed to honoring our city motto of Faith, Family, and Community while at the same time continuing the growth of our economy and quality of life.

So, what makes our city so special? You may get a different answer from each citizen, but I personally believe the warmth and generosity of the people of our great City is our most enduring quality. Our predecessors over the last 108 years have given us a strong foundation and a truly outstanding City.

As Mayor, I would like to invite you to visit some of the amenities that Sulphur has to offer. Sulphur Parks and Recreation features many beautiful parks, outstanding recreational facilities, an 18-hole golf course, and an amazing water park. The gateway to the Creole Nature Trail, a National Scenic Byway, begins in Sulphur. The Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point Center provides information on nature and wildlife areas, hiking trails, outdoor activities, nature and parks along the route. The Brimstone Museum and Henning Cultural Center tells the rich history of Sulphur, presents local art exhibits, and displays the distinctive culture of Southwest Louisiana. Sulphur is also the host to many festivals, such as the Calcasieu Cameron Fair and Christmas Under the Oaks festival.

I remain committed to working with our City Council, dedicated staff, citizens, and business leaders to maintain and enhance the services and programs that we so proudly offer. It is our goal to provide a government that will incorporate efficiency, equality, access, fairness, and balance for residents and visitors alike. All these qualities make the City of Sulphur a wonderful community in which to live, work, and play.

On behalf of the City Council, administration, and staff, we welcome you to the City of Sulphur. It is our hope that your visit with us will be an enjoyable and memorable one.

Sincerely,

 Mayor Mike Danahay

Our meetings are held every 3rd Tuesday, 5-6, at 501 E Burton, which is the SC3 building.

These are open meetings and everyone is invited to attend.

The City of Sulphur Code of Ordinances requires each business person or firm located inside the City Limits to purchase a business license from the City. This includes those conducting business inside the City Limits, but with their actual place of business located elsewhere. A business license must be acquired prior to opening a new business, and must be renewed annually for existing businesses.

If you are planning to open any new business inside the City of Sulphur you will need to contact our office prior to applying to verify that the property is zoned appropriately. All new businesses will be required to have a Certificate of Occupancy before the business can open.  Any liquor stores, hotels, motels, restaurants or daycares must obtain approval from the State Health Department. Every separate location of a business needs an occupation license. When returning the business applications, you will need to provide a color copy of your ID.

Should the location of your business change remember to:

  • Verify the land use before re-locating
  • Obtain a Certificate of Occupancy for the new building
  • Notify the license department of your new address

If you are applying for a home business you must first get approval from the Public Works director before applying for the Occupational license.

Liquor License must be approved by the city council.  To get on the agenda for the following month that you apply you must have ALL required documents turned in by the 25th of the month in which you apply. Council meetings are held on the second Monday of each month. To apply for your Louisiana state alcohol license, you can use the following website: http://www.atc.rev.state.la.us/.

Business license expire on the 31st of January. Renewals are due by March 1st to avoid interest and penalties.

The Louisiana state board of contractors has provided a website and an app to make it convenient for you make sure your state license is up to date, print a copy or to make sure the contractor you chose for home repairs or updates is state licensed. Below is the website

In addition to traditional police responsibilities such as accident and crime investigation, Sulphur officers engage in a wide variety of community activities.  We are committed to improving the quality of life in our city.

The Sulphur Police Department patrol cruisers are equipped with the most modern mobile computers that assist the officers in report writing and making it possible for the officers to access information from the state such as driver’s license check, vehicle information, and wanted persons.  The cruisers are also equipped with mobile video and audio equipment.  Combining this type of equipment with the officers has shown a decrease in citizen complaints and an increase in conviction rates.

This website offers a glimpse into the values and practices which drive our personnel. The officers and staff at the Sulphur Police Department serve this community with distinction and look forward to demonstrating our commitment to public safety to make Sulphur a great place to live and raise our families.
