As Police Officers, our mission is to help keep children safe by preventing the leading cause of death for children - - unintentional Injury

Fatal injury varies with age. For infants, the number one cause of death is due to unsafe sleeping environments, which result in sleep-related deaths such as accidental suffocation, asphyxia and SIDS.

In an effort to better protect infants in the City of Sulphur,  Louisiana, local law enforcement agencies are partnering with Cribs for Kids National Public Safety Initiative called Cops ’n Cribs.  This program will expand community policing policies to provide safe sleep tips and free portable cribs to families in need.

The purpose of this program is to keep Infants safe while they sleep, which causes most to think of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). However, as you can see by the graphic below, SIDS is a subcategory of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death).

This is a very logical partnership since police officers, as first responders, will see situations that are dangerous for infants long before social service agencies might. If we can get a crib to a family that needs one, chances are we might save that baby’s life.
